Forest Health Youth Crew Leader

The Rhode Island Natural History Survey RINHS seeks to hire a seasonal youth crew leader to provide support to the Forest Health Works Project FHWP . This project will survey for and control invasive plants affecting ecological values, including forest health, in RI. 60% of this position will be to lead the development and implementation of a non-residential high school youth corps model. In coordination with RINHS leadership and an Assistant Crew Leader, the Crew Leader will supervise students in invasive control and environmental restoration projects.

In addition, this position will provide support for 1 rapid surveys of large forest areas in Rhode Island for invasive plants, 2 development of natural resource reports and recommendations for inventoried areas based on principles of ecology and natural resource management, and 3 eradication and restoration regimens using contracted labor. The Crew Leader will participate in other RINHS programs and tasks from time to time.
Minimum Qualifications:
•Demonstrated youth group leadership experience in an outdoor setting
•A degree in natural sciences/environmental education
•Familiarity with the plant species and forest communities of southern New England
•Relevant field experience, including familiarity with the conditions and requirements for safe, effective work in rugged outdoor conditions
•Demonstrated ability to work systematically towards goals using independent initiative as well as by working collaboratively with partners and peers
•Strong organizational skills, strong writing skills, and an ability to work to deadlines
•Experience supervising field assistants, student interns, contractors or equivalent a plus

Garden\Estate Summer Internship

Description:
Winterthur is the home of the former H.F. DuPont with 1000 acres of naturalistic gardens located in Delaware's Brandywine Valley area. This position provides the opportunity to gain hands-on gardening training and experience in a public garden. The intern will be working alongside members of the horticulture staff throughout the historic property. The Intern will learn and practice sound horticultural techniques such as planting, pruning, mowing and weedeating with opportunities to learn design principles used in the creation and maintenance of a naturalistic garden. Intern will also participate in classes on plant identification, irrigation, turf management, IPM, arboricultural techniques & plant records attend lectures & field trips and complete short-term projects. Housing available on site. Two positions available.
Minimum Qualifications:
Six months educational and/or field experience in the study of horticulture or a related field ability to express ideas clearly, orally and in writing ability to execute oral and written instructions ability to lift 50 pounds ability to safely operate horticultural hand tools and power equipment sufficient hearing and sight to be aware of nearby guests and staff when using or close to equipment such as mowers, weed-eaters, blowers, and sprayers basic knowledge of gardening techniques and terminology. Must have a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
Wages, Salary and Benefits:
Salary $9.50 per hour. 35-40 hr work week – Monday –Friday. Housing available on site.

Job Title:
URI Botanical Gardens Positions

Description:
Assist URI Botanical Garden staff in the care and maintenance of the Matthew Horridge Tropical Plant Conservatory and URI Botanical Gardens. The conservatory includes about 2500 ft2 of tropical plants and is located in the Greenhouse Range on North Campus.
Minimum Qualifications:
Basic knowledge of plant care and horticulture. Experience with tropical and arid plants preferred, but not required. Must be dependable and available for some weekend watering duties.
